Do you have coworkers who drive you nuts? Do you desire to feel less stressed at work?

Here’s a secret:

Other People Aren’t Causing Your Stress

Repeat after me to feel less stressed at work

Repeat after me

We often think the reason we are stressed at work is other people – they don’t get things done on time, they don’t do things the right way, they talk too much, they’re lazy, etc.

Some of that is true. I’ve experienced all of that, felt every emotion of frustration along with you. Then I retired, I set up my life so I would NEVER have to deal with that again!

I started working a new job and within a week I was in a panic over something silly and not related to anyone I was working with. That’s when I knew the problem wasn’t my coworkers, it was me. It was always me and how I dealt with stress.

The bad news is that once you accept this reality, you can’t blame coworkers anymore. Ok, you blame, but not as with much.

The good news is that you can take steps to control your own behaviors and reactions.

  • People don’t get stuff done on time – make sure you’re clear about deadlines (and consequences). Maybe even adjusting them for certain repeat offenders.
  • Create step-by-step instructions (with images) on how to do the things that drive you nuts when people mess them up.
  • Set boundaries for yourself – times when coworkers can or can’t come to you. I used to have giant pink headphones – they sent a message I was busy and it really cut down on interruptions. Or block off time on your schedule as “focus time,” or “deal with people” time.
  • Try breathing techniques or meditation. I used to walk away (when I could) if things got too crazy and stressful. It’s amazing how five minutes can change your mindset.

Start taking control of your work environment!

You can control your environment in more ways than you think. Once you do it the first time, you’ll feel more empowered to do it again or try different strategies.

The next step here is:

  • Adjust your behavior so others can better meet your needs (without them realizing it).
  • Set boundaries around your time and space.
  • Find something that will relax you.
