This weekend I traveled to Columbus, OH for the annual Igniting Souls Conference. This was my 4th year and each year I learn even more. Some of these things I already know, but I heard them in a new way this year making them feel like new lessons. Here are a few lessons from the Igniting Souls Conference.

Core

You need to build up your core. Just like when you go to the gym and build your core to strengthen your body, you need to do that with your mind. Without a strong core, you are susceptible to criticism and the whims of others.

When you know who you are, you can resist the temptations.

Leadership

I’ve learned that I wanted to be lead so I can learn to lead others. It’s a skill I’ve learned over time, sometimes I’m good at it, and other times I need to improve my skills. But knowing who I am, what’s important to me and what’s important to others is key to success in this area.

It’s an honor to be nominated

I was a top 10 finalist for an Author Academy Award. I really wanted to win, but I didn’t. I learned that it’s ok. My book isn’t going to succeed based on an award, but on what I do with the book.

Also, I was able to connect with other authors who made the top 10 but didn’t win. We were able to commiserate together, but also support each other. I want to give a shout out to Judy Herman and her book Beyond Messy Relationships and to Daphne V Smith and her book What’s your Scarlet Letter? Recognize Your Hurts Release Your Shame Reclaim Your Voice. Both are wonderful women with big hearts and great books.
