Blog

If you didn’t read my last blog post, you should start there. It will help you get in the mindset needed to create goals for 2020. Or, dare to be different and start with this post to creating actionable goals.

This post is to help you break free from new year’s resolutions that don’t work or the disappointment of not meeting goals because some element was missing when you created it.

Element Of An Actionable Goal #1 – Relevant And Rewarding

Take a look at how you answered the questions from my previous post. This is one step in evaluating what types of goals are relevant and rewarding to you. If the goal doesn’t inspire you in some way, you’re not going to work towards it. So make sure any goals you have are aligned with where you want to go and will bring you a sense of accomplishment when achieved.

Element Of An Actionable Goal #2 – Measurable

  • Goals need to be measurable or they rarely work.
    • I’m going to lose weight!
    • I’m going to eat better!
  • That’s great, but what does that mean and how do you know if you achieved it?
  • Make sure your goal has a measurable aspect to it so you know when you achieved it. That way you can celebrate when you achieve it.

Element Of An Actionable Goal #3 – Time-Bound

I’ve set a lot of open-ended goals, I usually make progress on them. I rarely fully complete them. But once I set a time limit to it, that all changes and I accelerate my progress.

Here’s a secret, I don’t always achieve the goal in the time I set for it. I’m usually okay with that. You see, the time limit forced me to make more progress toward the goal than if I had let the time frame open.

That in itself is often a success.

What do I need to do:

There are several elements to successful goal setting, but making them relevant, rewarding, measurable, and time-bound will make your goals more actionable and bring you greater levels of success.

Now set 3-5 goals for 2020 and get to work on them.

The idea here is that you can create actionable and achievable goals and avoid the disappointment you’ve felt in the past with goals.

Now, if you’re one of those people who is genuinely interested in how to turbocharge this process, do yourself a favor and schedule a label breaker coaching session with me where I can help you refine your goals.
