As a cleft lip and palate patient and a New York state resident. I support this legislation and hope you do.

If you’re one of the New York state residents wants to give kids with congenital abnormalities a chance, then here is a resource to help make it happen.

Every Child Needs A Chance

New York state residents: One in 38 babies born in New York are born with a congenital anomaly. Although surgeons can often repair these conditions, insurance companies often deny or delay coverage, stating it is cosmetic or non-functional. These surgeries are intended to help children function and grow normally. Surgeons plan around the developmental growth of a child, to optimize the results of the surgery, delays can impact the results of surgery.

The most important thing is that surgical repair may impact a child’s eating habits, speech, and socialization. Delays in surgery may delay the physical and psychological development of a child, this can create an additional drain to the local community.

This is very important to everyone because while the impact on the local community is a good reason to support 1 in 38, supporting our fellow neighbors and family is even more important. The United States and New York have some of the best health care in the world, but what does that mean if we don’t have access to that care?

Even worse, children (and adults), who are doing everything right – get health insurance, pay their premiums, are denied or delayed getting procedures that will help them live a normal life. Over the years, many asked why I have one of the most expensive health insurance plans offered. This is why – denied and delayed medical procedures. The threat and impact of denied or delayed medical care. Not everyone has the option to get the “Cadillac” health insurance. Nor should it be needed to address medically necessary congenital anomalies. We can change that in New York state.
